DENON

DENON, WHERE DOES THAT COME FROM?

It’s a contraction of Denshi Onko, which means electric sound in Japanese

SOUNDS FAIRLY MODERN

The Denon brand actually dates back to 1938, but the company goes way back, to 1910, when an American entrepreneur called Frederick Whitney Horne set up the Nipponophone Phonograph Company, in Yokohama

WHAT DID THEY DO?

They were one of the very first companies to make phonographs and distribute records in Japan. It became known as Nippon Columbia in 1928 an by the late 30’s had designed the worlds first electric direct drive turntable

ANY OTHER FIRSTS?

The professional disc recorder in 1939, the stereo moving coil pickup in 1951, the first LP in Japan in 1957, the digital audio recorder in 1972..

SO WHAT ARE THEY UP TO THESE  DAYS?

Denon are still very big in high-end and professional audio and they’re leaders in home cinema technology. In 1995 they launched the worlds first Dolby AC-3, THX 5.1 processor and any time now we’re expecting some news on top-end DVD
